Speaker’s Research Interests: Dr. McCole’s laboratory employs a multidisciplinary approach to advance understanding of how inflammation impacts epithelial barrier function. The team integrates electrophysiological, molecular, biochemical, and imaging techniques to investigate the regulation of epithelial barriers and mucosal defences using both in vitro and in vivo model systems. These studies are translated to human disease through the analysis of intestinal biopsies from patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In parallel, the lab is exploring novel therapeutic strategies aimed at restoring barrier function.
