Title: Paligenosis, the cell program underlying regeneration, metaplasia, and tumorigenesis

Speaker’s Research Interests: Dr. Mills investigates regeneration, metaplasia, and tumorigenesis in the gastrointestinal tract. His basic science work focuses on the processes that enable mature cells to rearrange their structure and become proliferative, regenerating cells. In chronic injury and inflammation settings, regenerative cells can persist as metaplasia, which in turn can cause cancer. Recently, his lab’s research has shown that differentiated cells can become regenerative via a three-stage process that is fundamental and conserved across cell types. He has named this process paligenosis. Although paligenosis drives tissue repair, it can also increase the risk for mutation accumulation by allowing old cells to proliferate, furthering chronic, pre-cancerous conditions in the stomach, pancreas, and esophagus. Dr. Mills also pursues several translational efforts, including clinical trials, to apply paligenosis findings toward better prevention or treatment of tumors in the GI tract.
