Career Development Club

The Career Development Club helps promote the academic career development of SDDRC members and their academic staff.

The Club offers an opportunity for faculty, particularly early-stage faculty, to present and discuss projects that are at various stages of grant preparation from Career Development Awards and K-awards to full research grants at the R and U level. The goal of the meetings is to obtain feedback for work-in-progress and elicit critical input on strategies for conceiving and writing new applications or addressing critiques from already reviewed grants. Other aspects of career development such as academic career planning or submission of research papers are also within the scope of the Club. In addition, formal seminars from faculty or outside speakers with a focus on career development will be presented several times per year.

The Club meets on the last Thursday of the month from 12:00–1:00 p.m.

The CDC meetings use a hybrid format, both in-person and virtual, for maximal participation. Presenters have a range of interests from clinical/translational to basic/translational research, so all participants get to learn about diverse research ideas and strategies. The format of the meetings consists of 30–40 minutes of presentation followed by 20–30 minutes of intense discussion. Free lunch is provided to in-person attendees.

We will have at least 3 senior, highly experienced faculty members at the meetings to guide the discussion and provide feedback:

Dr. Rohit Loomba
Professor of Medicine, Chief, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and Director of Hepatology at UCSD

Dr. Richard Boland
Emeritus Professor of Medicine and former GI Division Chief at UCSD

Dr. Lars Eckmann
Professor of Medicine at UCSD, SDDRC Co-Director

Additional faculty from the SDDRC leadership will also attend whenever possible.

You will have a chance to participate in person at the ACTRI Room 1W516 or connect via Zoom.

We encourage all interested faculty to join us at the meetings. The meetings will be informal and informative, and provide an excellent opportunity for networking.
